Sports stadia and sports clubs contribute significantly to the heath and wellbeing agenda, not just in terms of the sports and physical activity opportunities they provide, but also their work with local communities, their promotion and involvement in agendas relating to engagement with young people, health education and activities that improve health.
The Wigan Borough Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network is the first borough wide initiative set up and launched in the UK . It has been commissioned by and is funded by the NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan in order to work with sports stadia and clubs across the Wigan borough to support them in becoming healthier environments for their fans, staff, visitors and the local communities they serve.
This new Network will work on a one to one basis with a large number of clubs conducting ‘Health Impact Assessments’ in order to recognise how they are addressing local health needs by illustrating the good practice undertaken.
