WIGAN SPORTS NETWORK NEEDS YOU!

WIGAN SPORTS CLUBS CAN BENEFIT FROM A WIDE RANGE OF FREE SUPPORT TO ENSURE THEY ARE ‘FIT FOR PURPOSE’

The Wigan Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network is offering professional and amateur sports clubs the opportunity to join its existing high profile members in ensuring that stadia and clubs across Wigan become healthier environments for their fans, staff, visitors and local community.

To date the Network has recruited many high profile sports clubs and stadia as members including Wigan Athletic, Wigan Warriors and Leigh Sport Village, along with leading amateur clubs including Wigan St Pats, Wigan Rugby Union, Leigh Genesis, Wigan and Ashton Gymnastics Club and Highfield Cricket Club also signing up to the support the Network.

Members of the Network benefit from one to one tailored support from the dedicated Network Lead who can support them to assess the health impact of their clubs, identify areas for funding or improvements and draw up an action plan.

Network Lead, Gemma Weston, said: “Sports clubs that have signed up to the Network have reported many improvements to their club specifically as a result of their membership. Improvements have included the implementation of healthier food options, refurbishments of kitchens, increase in sports participation, smoke free touchlines and more. Clubs have also been able to access support from our associates and partners to help promote health and wellbeing services to their supporters and have also been linked-in to national health campaigns such as Stoptober.”

Professor Kate Ardern Director of Public Health, Wigan Council , said: “Wigan Borough Sports Clubs make a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of our community. It’s great to see that many clubs have already signed up and are actively getting involved in the network”.

Some of the founder network members have achieved a great deal to date by being active parts of the network; one network member commented: “Being part of the network has really helped our club in lots of ways; the assessment we did with the network lead gave us some great ideas and also identified some new partners we could work with. Recently we have used the connections to assess our environmental impact and see how we can save money on utilities. We’ve even been supported in applying for funding for new kitchen equipment that will allow us to provide more food options. ”
