A Community Interest Company – Sporting Memories Network is working in partnership with Wigan Council to pilot the introduction of a Sporting Memories project in the Wigan Borough. The aim of the project is to use sports reminiscence to improve the wellbeing of older people including those with dementia living in their own homes and in care.
The Wigan Sporting Memories project is offering volunteers from a range of organisations/clubs free training and resources to provide reminiscence activities that improve the mental and physical wellbeing of older people and those living with dementia through tapping into the local passion, knowledge and love of sport. Using iconic images, reports and memorabilia to stimulate and unlock long term memories of watching or playing sport.
Each volunteer will be required to attend a half day training session on Wednesday 25th June from 1pm – 5pm. They will also receive the Sporting Reminiscence guide, packs of replay cards to use in sessions, the weekly Sporting Pink reminiscence newspaper and attend regular action learning sessions. The pilot project lasts for 12 months and organisations/volunteers will be expected to run regular reminiscence sessions with support. We will support you to find local groups of older people and deliver sessions.
